Abstract
The 2026 Africa Day theme highlights the critical role of sustaining water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) systems in building resilient African communities. For the health sector, WASH is foundational to disease prevention, infection control, and the functioning of safe health services, from reducing diarrhoeal disease and antimicrobial resistance, to supporting maternal, neonatal and surgical care. Despite progress, persistent gaps in access continue to drive preventable illness and place strain on health systems, increasingly compounded by climate-related shocks such as droughts and flooding. This calls for strengthened health system responses, including integrated public health interventions, climate-resilient infrastructure, and locally relevant research to inform equitable, sustainable service delivery across the continent.
