The South African regional Carbon – Climate Observatory (SArOCCO)

,

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The SArOCCO is a multi-institutional ocean carbon – climate science programme in support of effective governance of marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR) as a public climate – mitigation good in South Africa.  It aims to set up the 50 year observations-based machine learning reconstruction of the coastal carbon sink and high resolution modelling systems required to address what are in our view the 4 most pressing questions towards safe, scalable and effective mCDR in Southern Africa. A century long challenge.  It aims to minimize the risks and maximize the innovation-led development opportunities for marine CDR in Southern Africa.  It is the science contribution to a transdisciplinary marine CDR Hub to coordinate and communicate across the Governance, Science Finance, Innovation, Education and Social nexus (Monteiro & Midgley, SAJS 2023).
