The Chair in Urban Law and Sustainbility Governance at Stellenbosch University, in partnership with the SU School for Climate Studies and Climate Legal, is offering a first-of-its-kind Short Course for local government actors in June 2025!

Resilient development is essential for global climate change responses and municipalities are crucial for implementing local climate responses. The Climate Change Act (No. 22 of 2024) prescribes municipal climate interventions and is the framework for future local government climate action. The SU Law Chair in Urban Law and Sustainability Governance in partnership with the School for Climate Studies has developed an interactive two-day training course to unpack the Act and to support effective climate change action by municipal officials, administrators and civil society.

This in-person two-day course unpacks the climate change law framework applicable to local government (municipalities) and local governance in South Africa, specifically emphasising the application of the country’s recently promulgated Climate Change Act.

The course brings together some of South Africa’s most renowned climate change law and governance experts:

Prof Guy Midgley (Director: SU School for Climate Studies)
